“Don’t be gloomy. Do not dwell on unkind things. Stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. Even if you are not happy, put a smile on your face. ‘Accentuate the positive.’ Look a little deeper for the good. Go forward in life with a twinkle in your eye and a smile on your face, with great and strong purpose in your heart. Love life.” Gordon B. Hinckley
What an inspiring quote! I loved the line:
“Stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight.”
Recently I have noticed how so many
people invite drama into their lives.
Then they complain about the drama.
Or, some people walk around with black clouds over their heads. And when you see them, you just want to run because they suck so much energy from you.
We all have challenges, heartaches, obstacles, disappointment and fears. Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed or feel hopeless.
We can’t always change our circumstances. We can’t plan for every future circumstance that we may encounter. But, we can be in control of our attitude.
We can choose what thoughts are going to dominate our minds. Positive or negative? Hopeful or hopeless?
We can choose whether we allow obstacles to become the stumbling blocks or the stepping stones.
We can choose to chase dreams or give into our fears and nightmares.
We can choose to endure the daily grind or we can choose to love life.
What a fantastic quote! Having a positive outlook and attitude is so important if you want to be living your best life. Each day, every day, we encounter choice after choice. We can choose how we feel in each given moment. I think the fact that we are alive is enough to celebrate and feel grateful for the life we’ve been given. There is always someone out there who has it a whole lot worse than you do.
It’s always about choice – a choice of how you look at things. And you are right, there is always someone who has it worse off than you!
I know people like that. They remind me almost of Pigpen from Charlie Brown – how he walks around with visible dirt and odors following him! You can almost see people’s black clouds sometimes. And you know what? Terrible things happen to them often – speeding tickets, broken cars, etc. I always wonder if somehow they are inviting drama into their lives because they like it.
Anyway, I like to believe I’m a positive person! I look for patches of blue sky in between all of these summer storms. Literally and figuratively.
I love the Pigpen analogy! I just watched him on youtube the other day as my son came home from camp and was filthy and told him he looked Pigpen – so I had to show him!
I love that you look for patches of blue – literally and figuratively! That’s why you are such an inspiring writer to read!
I love that line too Leah. This is a great quote and post to push through the rest of the week. Those people that drain you are the worst and avoid them whenever possible!
I agree. That’s not to say that we don’t all get bummed and low and suck some energy some of the time – but it’s those who suck it ALL the time that I also try to avoid!
I try to avoid them….iPad issues…sorry!
I cannot take drama…I try to get as far away from it as possible! Love your quote!! We could all use an inspirational quote here and there!
I think some people just need drama to feel unique and special. They need attention anyway they can get it. I love quotes (as you can probably tell:) Inspire me AND make me think!
I agree – and fully believe that we have the choice to embrace the good and the kind and the love or to invite and embrace drama. This is a great reminder to embrace the light and love life.
Yes, we often “invite” the drama. It doesn’t always just “happen to us”. Love and live to the fullest!
Definitely! It seems so exhausting. I always think about something I heard growing up…life on its very own is going to present you with enough challenges, so why create them for no reason?-Ashley
That is SO true!!! Thanks for sharing!
I love the phrase “enjoy more fully!” It’s also good to remember that without the storms, we really wouldn’t appreciate the sunshine quite so much! But there’s no need to wish the sunlight away. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Erin! I totally agree – sometimes the only way we can appreciate the good is by feeling the bad!
Devils advocate here!
I can’t say I loved this quote at all….especially the part of put a smile on your face even if you are not happy.
I agree having an optimist attitude is wonderful and great sometimes…but not all the time. For me it is not authentic. What about feeling what you need to feel about the past present or future and letting it in? And sharing that with those who care about you?
I guess for me I like to offer up and receive in life the full package of a person. The good times, the bad times, the in between times. All of it.
Different point of view I guess.
Thanks for the perspective!
We only get one shot at it – why not make the most of it, right? Love the quote!
I often feel bad when people get stuck in the victim role – they are missing out on so much!
“Do not dwell on unkind things.”
I feel like you were channeling me with this, given my post and admitted inability to think happy thoughts for one who hurt me. Once again, you have a knack for posting just what I need to read!
Maybe I just have a knack of posting just what I need to read too!!
Hi Leah–I’m going to use this quote in my newsletter this week (I’m giving you credit!). Thanks for the inspiration/motivation!
Thanks, Nicole! Glad you liked it!
LOve the quotes. I’ll share this on Facebook.

Leah, I like this post so much. I feel like sometimes people wouldn’t know what to do or what to think about if it weren’t for those negative things..and recognizing them is part of protecting your own positive mental space and preventing yourself from losing all that energy that, just like you said, they drain from you.
I absolutely loved the positive message in your post and the reminder that we choose…each of us individually gets to choose how we think and feel.
Happy sharefest Saturday.

Great quote!
