Best 10’s: To Do in 2013

Last year I turned 40 and made a list of things I wanted to accomplish. You can see the list here.

I’m happy to say that many have been accomplished, and many I’m still working on. None were abandoned so that is success for me!! I also added a couple along the way and I’m still working on those ones too.

This year, I made another list of things I want to focus on, and things that I know will help me stay happy. I will still keep working on some of the things from last year’s list too  – just building on those.

To a great 2013!! Happy New Year!!

NYC Trip – Day 3

Up bright and early as this was our last day:(

I know. Really short trip.

We decided to re-do some of the walk we did yesterday – without the crowds.

We stopped off at Magnolia bakery and picked up a cupcake for later. We returned to Rockefeller Centre and this time really enjoyed the no crowd view of the skating rink and the tree.

We continued our walk along 5th Avenue and this time made it into FAO Schwartz. We also made our way to The Plaza and wandered through there before spending some time in Central Park.

We hopped on a bus and did the Uptown loop, noting all the museums we want to head back to see….

We then hustled back up town a bit and found the temple, and snapped a few more photos.

We heard it was calling for a big snow storm the next day, so decided to leave the city earlier than expected with promises to return in the spring (and many more times).

The drive home was fine for me (Zzzzzz), and McHottie did pretty darn good too:)

It was such an awesome little trip. Love just hopping in the car and going. Can’t wait to do it again.

NYC Trip – Day 2

We awoke in our darkened cell, still pretty excited to be in NYC.

I have been a few times, as had Robbie (although he didn’t see much the other times he was there is appears) – but like everything else, doing it for the first time together makes it the best:))

The weather outside was still pretty yucky. It was cold and misty. We had to use the umbrella we had bought the night before.  We grabbed a quick snack for breakfast and enjoyed Times Square’s hustle and bustle. The mormon.org campaign went a little crazy with their Christmas ads – but I gotta say, I loved it. I pointed it out to Rob, however right underneath was some video of half naked ladies, so he wondered why I was pointing it out! I thought it’s kind of ironic to have that underwear video under the mormon.org ads!

We purchased a hop on hop off bus ticket. Found a great deal. Or so we thought. The one we bought you couldn’t go inside the bus at all. I mean at ALL.

So we braved the cold and misty weather with some Australians, and off we went doing the downtown loop. We passed all the important parts of the city (so THEY say) and got some rain drop photos.

We certainly know where we want to return the next time we do an impromptu trip!

After a two hour freezing our butts off tour, we ended back up at Times Square area and made our way to John’s Pizzeria for some thin crust pizza.

Once you’ve been to Italy, pizza is never the same, but the restaurant was warm and the pizza was not so bad. We had an enjoyable lunch over a “pitcher of soda pop” (so American) and Martguerita pizza.

After lunch we did a little shopping. Gotta do some shopping when in New York. Unfortunately, right after Christmas the bank account is a little low, so we went to the HUGE Forever 21 store and got some goods that won’t last long, but were a super bargain and were super cute.

Shopping warmed us up enough to head back to our hotel to drop our loot, and then wander the streets.

We meandered along 5th Avenue, checked out the insane crowds at Rockefeller Centre (saw the pretty tree), braced ourselves for the few seconds we lasted in The American Girl store, gazed at some beautiful cathedral ceilings, gawked at the Christmas lights, and laughed at the lines outside FAO Schwartz and The Apple Store. We also pined away at the Plaza Hotel, before heading across the street to Central Park.

So cheesy as it may be, we thought about a carriage ride. But a nice young man convinced us of taking an hour long rick saw tour through the park. Let me tell you, it was my highlight of the day.

He took us through the park and pointed out the famous skating rink, boat house, fountains, bridges, strawberry fields; ya know, all that movie stuff that I love to see:)

We were warm under blankets, and got to take some great pictures as the sun was setting over the city. Bea-u -ti-ful:)

We headed back to our hotel, but not before stopping for some shopping again (new shoes for Robbie) and then had a quick snooze before we headed up to Hell’s Kitchen area and enjoyed dinner at a place called Becco (that I had been to previously with Larissa when I was in NYC with her back in 2004).

Another successful day. Love NYC. Love being there with Robbie McHottie.

NYC Trip – Day 1

So with my new camera in tow, we headed out the door for our impromptu trip to NYC.

Who said you can’t be 40 (with a whole slew of kids) and still be fun and spontaneous? Ok – so we left the kids behind, which made travel life so much easier.

Gotta have some divorce perks -and this is one that I will take advantage of everytime.

Robbie McHottie drove all the way. You’d think I don’t know how to drive when I am with him.

We’ve also discovered that I, like Sam, am asleep in 2.5 seconds as soon as the car starts moving.
I guess I don’t sleep well at night? I think he needs to take me for a drive during the night more often…

At any rate, I slept almost the entire way; waking up here and there to make sure McHottie was ok.

Then we hit some nasty snow, so I tried to pry my eyes open to navigate directions and be McHottie’s cheering squad.

The unfortunate amount of snow tacked on about 2 extra hours:((

We did finally arrive, and found our way to our little hotel just off of Times Square.

We got a great deal, but I must say the room was teeny.

I mean small.

I mean, Robbie called it our “prison cell.” This is it. And it’s not just a picture of part of the room. It is the room.

We decided our review would read “Great for skinny people who like each other”. Otherwise, you might want something a tad bigger.

But we were fine (we really like each other and I guess we can be classified as on the skinnier side).

We headed out to the Shake Shack for dinner, a few blocks away. It was pouring rain and freeezing cold, and there was a long line, but we braved everything and had a burger and shake.

Sorry NY, but your Shake Shack burger ain’t got nothing over Toronto’s Burger’s Priest burger.

We headed back to our prison cell and had a enjoyable evening cuddled up in our cubicle, cranked the heat and drifted off to never never land.

Christmas Eve and Day

Finally the festivities started on Christmas Eve day.

We always have a special little Christmas Program – the tradition that I grew up with.

Zach played “Silent Night” and “Greensleeves” for us on the guitar.

Zach and Zandra read this Christmas alphabet story that they made up a few years ago.

I read “Teach the Children the True Meaning of Christmas” Santa story (with Sam and Josh holding up the art that was created by the kids years ago).

We then act out the Christmas Nativity story.

Rob then reads a poem he creates about our year, which you can read here.

The kids are all sent to their rooms, while we get out all the Christmas presents and place them under the tree. When they hear the tinkling of the bell, they come tearing down the stairs and begin to open the presents!

They exchanged their Secret Santa gifts too! (They are hugging their Secret Santa in the pics)

We then have a massive food buffet, and the kids all swear it is their favorite meal of the year!

This year Gabe, Zandra and Sam left at 7pm, and Zach and Josh just hung out with us.

Morning arrived, and Santa presents and stockings! Cinnamon buns and chocolate milk for breakfast before the boys go to their Dad’s.

Christmas day is pretty low key. I spent the day figuring out my NEW CAMERA that SOMEONE (that I love very very much and who is the most amazing man in the world….) got as a surprise for me!!

We also decided last minute to go on a trip to NEW YORK CITY!! So, we were packing for that!

Gabe, Zandra and Sam came back and enjoyed their Santa gifts, we had some leftover turkey soup, and shed some tears that Christmas is over!

Out the door everyone went on boxing day including Rob and I as we headed to NYC!!!

Rob’s 2012 Christmas Poem

Christmas 2012

Another year has come and gone and “off to down under” won’t be too long

The adventures of the CDFs in 2012 were mighty exciting….Listen to this tale it is most inviting

Early in the year we slapped on the boards to ski among the hoards

A Birthday and fun and valentines to make

It was pretty cold for goodness sake!

Family Day weekend in the blazing winter sun so much fun!!

Then to the trees and and warm tropical breeze

Meski and Robbie dawned their gear, without fear and zipped and zapped then went for a nap

Bathing suits anew, we certainly weren’t through, 40 years had passed it was time for a birthday blast

Road warriors we were, the interstate we rode, on the water’s edge, our love we did pledge

Back again, our trips a delight, a second celebration with singing….. what a fright!!!

Then it was summer at home….. relaxing was over….soccer, baseball and sitting in clover!!

A graduation, anniversary, and birthdays and so much fun, May, June and July we’re all on the run!

To Collingwood too for some fun in the woods….a tennis tournament for sure…a cup was won…we even had John McEnroe visit us for fun!!

Then oh what is this? A trip to the Sunshine State!! Oh the kids could hardly wait.

But wily were we, and with a trick and wink, the trip was not to Mickey but rather afloat on the big drink

While on these adventures of the high sea, we swam with the rays and tanned in the sun, we even saw Josh invent a new sink!!!

Back to school..for some high school, working hard, soccer, cross country, ultimate…never sit…never quit

Into the fall, and halloween…costumes a five…how do we survive!

Into November…we went to the science centre..two trips to the hospital….how is it possible

Have no fear we got the all clear….

Well now it is here, the ring of a bell…Christmas 2012

Quiet Elfie a visiting, pointing and prodding began….from the stairs he fell….but all to soon he would be well

Soon a quiet night we wait for the sound…of Santa landing on the ground…not much left to say but love is here….the CDFs ready for another year!!!

Christmas Eve Day and Bowling…

My Mom and sister arrived for Christmas on the 22nd and we had a yummy Christmas Dinner on the 23rd (I forgot to take pics).

We promised my sister we would go bowling! So that was our December 24th during the day activity. Normally we try to do something “wintery” but the weather wasn’t agreeing, so bowling it was!

We had a great time – with Gabe being King Bowler!

I’ll let the pictures show how much fun we had:

Of course, here’s a few of what else we were doing while waiting for Christmas Eve to start:

This year for Christmas we only had Gabe, Zandra and Sam until 7pm Christmas Eve which meant we had to have all our Christmas Eve festivities done by then. They came back at 6pm on Christmas day for the night, but Zach and Josh were gone by 9:30 am Christmas day. Sounds complicated, but it works for us now…we got it figured out.

So, Christmas Eve began at 3pm….

December Quote Wall

We built our 2nd annual “Quote Wall” at the beginning of December. You can see last year’s here.

Every week I find a quote that inspires, teaches, is funny or speaks the truth well, and put it on our bulletin board in the kitchen.

We then read that quote at Family Home Evening and discuss what we think it means. On the back of the quote is always a little note from me to the kids expressing my thoughts and love to them. I also blog about the quote every Monday.

It is one of my favorite “weekly” CDF traditions! I love quotes, the simplicity of some, the depth of others. My clients know me well enough to know I often use quotes, analogies and metaphors to explain things. I am known for this!

At home now we often turn to quotes – even the kids do. We think in quotes! Often someone will hear something and say to me, “that’s a great quote for quote of the week!” Or they will hear about a situation and say “that’s like that quote we had a couple of weeks ago!”

Every December, I take all the quotes of the week from the year and put them up on the kitchen wall surrounding our quote bulletin board. Everyone then goes and chooses their favorite quotes from the year and marks them with their initials.

Faves this year:

Leah : I always can’t decide! : “Good is the enemy of best“, “Success each day should be judged by the seeds sown and not the harvest reaped“, “Carpe Diem” and of course my next year motto “When it is all said and done, you will discover it was never random“.

Rob: “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar.”

Gabe: “A bad attitude is like a flat tire, you can’t go anywhere until you change it.

Zandra: “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

Zach: “The bad news is time flies, the good news is you are the pilot.”

Josh: “Good is the enemy of best.” Tied with “Carpe Diem.”

Sam: “Don’t be a shark, be a fish.”

When the quote wall went up, Zach came in the kitchen so excited to see it! “I love this”, he exclaimed. He’s pretty passionate when it comes to anything we do as a tradition. We were talking about quote of the week and somehow the direction of the conversation turned to me promising that even when everyone was grown and moved on out, I would still send them a quote of the week.

That’s a lot of wisdom that we will gain over the years!

Do you have a favorite quote?
